Leonard was scruffy, gross, worn, and needed a goddamn shower.
That's what happens when he takes a bus from Georgia to San Francisco, because there's no way in hell he's taking a plane with those damn Kaiju attacking things. Yeah, they didn't come very often, but they came enough. Enough for him to lose people, at least. Well, a person. And that's why he was going all the way to that damn academy.
He climbed onto another bus. He didn't know what town he was in - didn't care. He just wanted to get to that damn academy so he could take a damn shower in a place that wasn't a sink in a bus station.
